Omnibus surveys

Introduction

Research New Zealand’s omnibus service provides a cost-effective research solution for clients who have a relatively small number of questions to ask. By combining their questions with those of other clients in one survey, they share the costs of conducting that survey and avoid the cost of funding the entire survey on their own.

The sample

Each omnibus is based on a nationally representative sample of n=500 New Zealanders, 18 years and over. There is some flexibility in terms of sample size and structure, with over-sampling of specific audiences available at an additional cost. If a larger overall sample size is required, another option is to ask the questions in consecutive surveys and then consolidate the results for these surveys in one data set.

Interviewing method

All interviewing is completed by telephone, from our purpose-built, call centre in downtown Wellington. This is a state-of-the-art facility which is IQS accredited, our industry’s highest quality standard.
The interviewing for an omnibus survey usually takes one week to complete after it has commenced.

Frequency

At least one omnibus survey is completed each month. This provides clients with a reasonable degree of flexibility to respond to issues that arise without much notice. As such, it is ideal for monitoring the success of communications and marketing activity over time, or obtaining an instant snapshot of public attitudes and opinions on current events.

Developing the questions

Upon receiving a client’s brief, we will design the questions in consultation with the client.

Current pricing

The cost of participating in an omnibus survey depends on the number and complexity of the questions to be asked and the level of reporting required. For example, current per question costs (excluding GST) range from $1,470 for a single response question (e.g. yes/no) through to $1,955 for an open-ended question.
These costs cover the cost of designing the questions, completing the interviewing and producing a set of tabulations. They also cover the cost of using the standard set of classification/demographic questions for analysis purposes (e.g. age and gender, household structure, marital status, income, geographic location).
Additional costs are incurred for over-sampling and reporting.
